Interview #1 Rebecca Carter/Disquieted Dreams

Where are you from? Charlotte,NC.

Tell us your latest news? I recently started Disquieted Dreams, a new small press for horror-centric work. We have released two anthologies this year, both of which performed above average in Amazon rankings for print and eBook sales.

When and why did you begin writing? I couldn’t even begin to tell you why I liked to write as a child but as an adult I started writing because I found the horror genre slowly eroding into something I did not enjoy. I decided to write stories I would enjoy and to my surprise people actually bought them.

What inspired you to write your first book? I really don’t feel like I was inspired. It was just something I did.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life? Everything I write is 100% fiction, at least I would hope so with the subjects I touch on.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing? Sometimes a story takes on an unintended political meaning, and it can be very difficult to pull that out without hurting the story.

What made you decide to sit down and actually start something? How do you think you’ve evolved creatively? For this press I think I recognized how many traps there are out there for unsuspecting authors. There are scammers behind almost every door and I wanted to start a place that authors could trust. I think my own work has leveled off and I have a chance to help others succeed.

What would you say are the main advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing against being published or the other way around? Self publishing only has two real downsides. 1) You’re on the hook for most of the cost to publish and 2) You’re on the hook for advertising yourself. With a publisher those costs are (should be) taken care of. That’s really the only difference these days.

Where do you see publishing going in the future? I think we will always have the big publishing houses, but I see them spitting into smaller imprints. Everything will be small or self published.

Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven’t included? You can attach this handsome headshot if you so choose (attached)
